I live in Germany but drive a 2000 base US-market Saab 9-3 (185 hp US). Overall I love the car, particularly on the autobahn. It's very stable throughout its speed range, including in excess of 220 KPH. As far as handling, I like the base German-spec suspension better than the US. The German suspension has less body roll compared to the US car. The body roll becomes very noticeable driving through the Taunus mountains where I live. Once you are used to it, you discover that the car will hold the road very well. I find the power to be more than enough to hold your own in most autobahn driving.

As to the diesel motor, they seem to work very well. Most of the 1.9 or 2.0 diesels have more torque than my turbo, which works great in most driving situations. I am impressed by the 1.9 liter diesels found in the VW Passat and the Renault Sport Lagune. Unfortunately, I have yet to drive Saab's diesel.

I like the utility of the Saab 9-3. Many of my friends (German and American) are amazed at how much the car can hold. The space comes in handy while traveling. I selected the Saab because I wanted to carry 4 adults in comfort with luggage and cruise at 200 KPH if I wanted to. The Saab 9-3 does that very well. The car has proven to be reliable (similar to my 2 Hondas), and a joy to own. And it does very well when the weather turns bad. It is excellent in the rain and the snow. And dealer support here in Germany is very good.
