I got the same problem in my old Altima. The dealer told me to replace the airbad control unit (~$700). I found that the airbags was actually ok. It was something wrong with the electrics. You can get some solutions from the Maintainence/Repair forum in http://www.edmunds.com townhall.
You can try something like the followings (I got this from the forum):
1. Turn the key to the "ON" position but do not start the engine (all the lights including the airbag light will be turned on).
2. Open the driver door
3. There should be a plastic switch/button on the side (this switch controls whether the doom light is on or not). Press it 7 times.
4. Close the door, turn the key to the "OFF" position.
5. Wait for 1 minute and then start the car.
You may have to repeat the above step 4-5 time. After I tried the first time, the airbag light flashed slower than before and then it was gone after the 5th times. I don't know why but it worked for my Altima !
