As a native upstate NYer living on a dead-end dirt road, 4 miles off anything called reasonable pavement; GET THE HAKKAs! pref. four 185 - 65 on separate wheels. They have phenomenal traction, even on ice. I commuted 38 miles each way & never missed a day. Two seasons was about the most I would get out of them, but worth the investment. This was on a '90 900T. The 185 profile helps w. your ground clearance as well as a narrower footprint to cut thru the deep snow. Not as responsive when the pavement's dry and a bit more body lean but acceptable. Especially when you're passing all the suvs that are off in the woods because the driver doesn't realise that 4WD only helps when going forward, and is actually worse when stopping or (esp.) turning.
NOTE: ALWAYS use snows on all 4 wheels: there is no easier way to make the car swap ends extremely abruptly than to have better traction on the front when the going is yucky.
If you want to test this theory: next time it rains go to an empty BIG parking lot. Get moving about 30 mph, while keeping the power on, twist the wheel& hit the brakes at the same time. You won't roll unless you slide into something, but you may be looking for a change of underwear.
This illustrates what a front drive car does when there is better traction on the front. The power to the front keeps the front brakes from acting much, while the rears are free-wheeling with lots of brake action so the rears break free & slide first. (It's also a standard ice-racing trick to pivot a car around corners).
