I finally got around to installing the Infinity Kappa 32.1cf speakers in the dash this weekend to replace the Saab OEM speakers. As Ken suggested in an earlier post (see below), I used a speaker wire harness adapter from Circuit City so I can easily re-install the OEM speakers if I ever need to.
Since the harness is not an exact match for the connector on the speaker wire in the Saab, Ken suggested removing part of the plastic on the harness socket so the connector will fit into it. I came up with an alternate solution that others may find helpful.
I noticed that the connector from the Saab speaker wire would fit into the harness socket if you rotated the socket 180 degrees. Of course, now the positive and ground wires would be reversed. Ah, but the harness socket can be easily disassembled and reassembled to exchange the contact pins (and the wires connected to them). Once that is done, the Saab speaker wire connector will plug right into the harness connector.
Steps
1) Remove the white plastic retaining clip on the harness socket that holds the contact pins in place. Do this by using a small flat blade screwdriver to push in the fins that stick through the sides of the harness socket. Save the white plastic retaining clip.
2) If you now look inside the harness socket using a good light, you will see each metal contact pin is held in place by a small plastic arm with a "tooth/pin" on it. Gently lift this plastic arm up to disengage the pin while gently pulling on the wire attached to the metal contact. If the metal contact does not come loose and slide out the back of the socket, just keep working on lifting the plastic arm a little higher. I used an unbent paper clip to pry up the plastic arm, but a stiff straight pin or very small jewlers screwdriver would work also.
3) Use the same technique to remove the other metal contact (with its attached wire) from the harness socket. Replace each metal contact (exchanging its location) by pushing it back into the appropriate hole on the back of the harness socket until the small plastic arm snaps into place.
4) Replace the white plastic retaining clip by sliding it into the harness socket until it snaps into place.
This may sound complicated, but it is much harder to describe than it is to actually do. It takes all of about 3 minutes.
What took longer was adding the capacitor that came with the Infinity Kappa 32.1cf speakers to the positive wire of each speaker wire harness. This just involved cutting out a section of the positive wire on each harness and replacing that section with the capacitor. Since this involved a little bit of soldering, it took a while but was fairly easy.
I hope this is helpful to others that want to replace their dash speakers but don't want to cut the factory speaker wires in the dash.
