I must first mention that I have a degree in audio and video, and have worked closely with many UK based AV manufacturers. SO my comments are based on actual data, observations and measurements I made at work. And now the comments...
The Pioneer units are using output IC's which have a useless output current drive capability. On top of that, the power supply stage in the stereo is one of those heavily protected types, which are very restrictive in delivering instantanious large amount of current to the speaker output. I suppose that must be, because it tries to sense if there is a short across the speaker beforehand.
On top of that, the heatsink in the stereo is a joke. It is unable to dissipate the energy from the output IC. The inbuilt thermal tracking circuit then starts reducing the sound output as the stereo gets hotter.
But the speakers. Yes, what can we say about the speakers? They were mainly made in Malaysia from a design once used in valve radios. In the list of speaker manufacturers, Malaysia doesn't even register as a reliable source. I can only say that they were selected due to price, rather than engineering quality. When put in an anechoic chamber and measured with a soundfield microphone, those paper cones produce wave patterns that haven't been seen since the seventies and early eighties.
Changing the speakers alone is a small step. But it only works for low output volumes. If you turn the stereo up, the amp just goes into "poor quality" mode.
By the way, the optional amp for the door speakers ain't much better! I was building more advanced stuff than that for the car in the eighties!
