Looking for a used 93 - 99-2000 vintage. Been considering Maximas, Accords, A4's. Posted earlier on other board to get other POV's. Test drove 2 99 base 93's (automatics) at the Saab dealer today.
Here's the balance sheet:
Assets:
Design
Fun
Responsiveness
Versatility
Unique
Durability (not reliability)
Liabilities:
"Floaty steering" - seemed weird. Steering was tight, and car responded but I still felt "disconnected" to road.
General dashboard rattle and "cricket" noise from front passenger side on both test cars I drove (strange)
Exepected total cost of ownership.
Here's my dilemma...
Do need a new car. Have a 10 year old Volvo wagon - 125K miles, AC busted ($1K to fix), busted tailight (hit it myself in a fit of rage when changing the bulb), drivers seat sagging, RWD, major maintenance coming up soon. Other than that, the car's been a tank more or less. Just bought a new 95 wagon for my wife. Don't expect too many problems with the 95.
Drive 82.5 miles per day to work - primarily country roads so the 93 with the FWD, handling, and comfort should be fine. What is holding me back is this...i intend to keep this car 6-8 years. I have no doubt that the car will have the durability to go 150-200K miles. But I really don't want to constantly throw $$ into this from day one - I can deal paying to do the regular maintenance since I did that with the volvo.
However, it seems as if the 900/93 (I guess mostly the NG900) are problem cars. I have to believe there are lots of people that have 900/93's that are of slightly above average reliability. DOn't expect a Saab to have Toyota/Honda reliability but that's OK. I just don't want to get stuck with the car from hell...
Sorry for the misc rambling here...to much beer.:>...seriously though. I liked the 93's and I guess I'm looking for moral support to make the emotional decision to buy the car!
