1994-2002 [Subscribe to Daily Digest] |
The coupe, hatch, convertible and new 9-3 wagon will all be introduced at the same time, probably november 2002 as a 2003, according to my local dealership.
I haven't seen nice pic, only heavy spy shots. Viggen is said to sport a 300hp, all wheel drive, turbo V6. I would assume the torque would be in the 325-350 area, if the current 230hp viggen makes 250. However, a 285 hp engine might be used instead, because chassis in development is said to have same problem as current Viggen...too much torque steer. but it will be all wheel drive, so that is kinda conflicting.
also known is that Saab will introduce 5-8 new models within the next 5 years. GM is for real. Makes perfect sense, since Cadillac is pretty much a dead duck in consumer confidence. GM will use Saab as their primary Lexus/BMW fighter for the younger generation. confirmed new models are:
- all new 93 for 2003, to include all new wagon, 93 viggen
- all new 95 for 2004, to include 95 viggen. Aero name will be dropped, only use for euro market. I guess Saab wants to make their performance line more identifiab le, like BMW uses M for M3 and M5.
- Sonnet Spider Convertible (2003 (!) release). This is said to be a super convertible, which will share Caddy's platform for their super convertible due out later. Will make 250hp, with a high pressure turbo with a psi of 20. Makes perfect sense. I even saw a sketch of it from a euro mag, looks really nice.
- all new SUV, 2004 release, WILL NOT BE BASED ON AZTEK, RENDEVOUS platform.
I've also read rumors about a 9-6 or 9-7, which will be a flagship, LS430 fighter to be priced above $50,000. And I have also read about a 9-2, which will be a small coupe. Haven't heard enough concrete info about these models though.
Regardless though...all this talk makes GM look very serious about Saab, and their intention to use it as a real global luxury nameplate to compete against import's best.
