...when only a SELECT FEW even knew what a Bimmer was. Growing up in the
Midwest of the 60s and early 70s, the 2002 was still considered a strange, exotic cult car....and who in their right mind would pay $4000 in ca. 1972
for a 2002, when you could get a Vega or a Pinto for half that, right?
Dealers were few, and the cars rare enough on the roads that those drivers
would wave and honk to each other as they passed by. No real "snob" appeal, because how could you be snobby about a strange looking car from Bavaria that nobody who drove Chevys had any idea what it was? It just
didn't make that kind of impression on people.
And boy, were those cars fun to drive! even with the weak synchros in the gearbox. But that was then, and times have changed, and now BMW makes
four? five? times as many cars in a year as does Saab. The fun is still
there, but almost in spite of the nameplate, not because of it, and that's
a damn shame.
But no, I would not trade my 9-3 for a 330Ci.....
