You're probably hearing the AC compressor or the antilock charging up. The AC is on by default (at least on the SE) but you can set it to be off by default easily.

This (9-3SE) is my 11th car and one of the few that I've kept for such a long time; 3 yrs and counting. 11 is a lot of cars for a 32 yr old.

Good things to expect
1) Great joy when you play those "disappearing acts" stowing large things in a seemingly small car.
2) Blowing away wannabe BMW 323s with said items stowed in the rear of your car.
3) Having the car grow on you more and more. I'd love a 9-5 Aero but nobody can pry my 9-3 away from me.
4) Turbo rush. (HOT and Viggen) Need I say more?
5) Great winter/snow car. This car responds very well to snow tires.
6) Great aerodynamics. Last night I had a Maxima get blown into my lane by the heavy winds and rain. I felt the car quiver a bit from the gust and that was it as I passed him and everybody else.
7) That cockpit feeling when you're the driver.
8) Good visibility vs a Honda if you keep the stock suspension.
9) Affordable accessories. Love those built in Thule mounts.
10) Easy to work on if you're going to keep it for a long time. Try this test; Pop the hood. There are two clips at the top of the grille. Squeeze them and pull the front grill off in seconds. I'm not sure why you'd need to do this but it's a good example.

Bad things to expect
1) Squirly handling for such a nice car (SE). Changing the dampers makes the biggest difference there. Sorry, whatever they use on the stock SE makes the ride jiggly. I've replaced the springs, bushings, dampers, and rear swaybar but that's only because I'm picky and love to tweak things. (engineer) It's now comfortable and really grabs the road.
2) High maintenance costs. Actually, they haven't been too high for me but they are supposed to be. Don't forget to check that maintenance free battery! I haven't had any real problems. 53K miles. Oh yeah, the light bulbs blew at 50K miles.
3) People calling you a Snaab.
4) Tickets, especially with "arrest me red". Got two the first month I owned the car.
5) I'm really stretching for bad things here; Ah yes, funny suspension noises once in a while. Apparently, you're supposed to bring it back at 15K miles to get the subframe retorqued. That solved the issue at 20K miles and it's been fine since.
6) Having to listen to; Why didn't you get an Audi, BMW, Volvo, etc. sheesh!
