I drove a new 2002 A4 1.8T (Frontrak) with Audi's new CVT (I believe it's called Multitronic) transmission. Here are my impressions.
The exterior styling is ok, but it doesn't grab you or make you say "I love it". I like the interior, however I could not get comfortable in the seats. With the 1.8T you cannot get leather or power seats. You can get cloth or leatherette. The seats have a manual height adjustment via the hand lever similar to what VW has. There is a power 4-way lumbar adjustment.
The CVT transmission makes the car quicker than the Tiptronic. However, you lose the sensation of actually changing gears. You can put it in manual mode (like Tiptronic). I found the handling and ride of the A4 to be its strong point. It is much better than my 9-3SE in this area. Of course, the 9-3 is an older design.
