Since you indicate (or at least imply) that the door speaker locations do not seem to have the speakers, I would guess you have a 9-3 base model (and not the 9-3SE). The base model comes with only dash and rear speakers and the door locations are the Saab 9-3 audio upgrade kit which includes two mid-range/subwoofer speakers and an amp to drive them. As Jeremy has mentioned, though, Saab charges A LOT for that upgrade kit...much more than it is worth in my opinion.
Some people have, as you suggested, disconnected the dash speakers and installed full-range speakers in the doors. This would require some wire-splicing at the connector behind the Saab stereo system's head unit because the speaker wires running from the doors are not connected to the head unit (they terminate in a connector made to plug into the Saab audio upgrade amp). Other people have installed full-range speakers in the door and a separate amp to drive them. The Saab head unit has an 8-pin DIN output made to be connected to an additional amp.
For a good overview of all of this, and your options, start by going to the FAQ section of the http://www.saabnet.com site (click on the FAQ link above) and then click on the link for Richard Bevan's "NG900/9-3 Audio Guide". This document gives a really good overview, with pictures, of your options. After you have read that, then search this board for previous discussions as DavidFromNY suggests. There have been lots of discussions on this over the last 18 months.
Good luck and post again if you have any more questions.
Mark
