I just test drove 1999 9-3 5spd 5dr. Seller is a used car dealer (the place seems very modern/established) that only offers best price--i.e. no price negotiating. Car is 30k miles @$16K,is off lease car (looks like
only 1 owner) and obtained via auction, no maintenance records, only owners manual etc..
Before I test drove, I observed:
1) Mich tires are worn very low (looks like they were never replaced)
but no apparant scalloping or uneveness
2) Rotary disks are worn-very low
3) Former owner was a smoker, the interior reeks of smoke badly
4) Body is in great shape, no apparent body work at all
5) Trunk looks/smells brand new (the interior smoke scent did not
get to the trunk)
6) Seats and interior apholstery appears a bit darkened from the smoke
7) Radio buttons have no numbers on it (how do you see them in the dark?)
I did not see this during the night to see if any appeared.
8)Glove compartment door color does not seem to match the rest of the
tan coloring. It seems a darker tan.
9) All doors open/close smoothly.
10) Engine chassis looks dry -no oil leaks, most other things look fairly
new. No grease, no excess rust, etc.
Test drove it and got these results:
1)wheels seems to slip on acceleration
2)car tends to pulls to the right alot especially coming to a stop
3)car drives fine on highway, seems sluggish over 70mph though even with
turbo
4)tapping/clicking noise at idle (sounds like a belt type clicking). Would
an idle belt be worn at only 30K?
5)stereo works fine
Does any one have any advice on this? Good, bad?
The dealer said he will replace tires, brakes and get rid of smoke.
I read through all the TSN bulletins on 1999 9-3s and got as much info
as I could.
Questions to anyone:
1) Will new tires improve slippage greatly? Should I not purchase because
of slippage and pulling to the right?
2)Is it really possible to eradicate smoke smell (that has been there for
2yrs) by de-ionizing and shampooing? I have allergies and really need
to be able to get rid of the smoke.
3)Since this is not a certified used Saab, any suggestions on how to
make sure the dealer makes good on his promises to replace wheels, brakes
and eliminate smoke? The dealer won't start work until a purchase agreement is signed.
Thanks in advance to anyone who responds!
