I actually took delivery of a WRX wagon last week. It is a whole different animal from a Saab or an S4. The S4 is $40k new and will cost a ton of money to repair after the warranty runs out ($800 alternators, $1200 control arms that go between 40k and 50k). It is MIGHTY comfortable, though. The WRX was only $22,500 and the reported reliability is quite good. I wanted something inexpensive long-term. I find the WRX interior quality perfectly ok as long as you keep in mind it's not a luxury car. It's a little AWD Subaru with a phenomenal drivetrain and normal Japanese quality.
Our 9-3SE's interior is better quality (luxury) but it too is a different animal. The 9-3 will be swapped out for a 9-5 sometime next year - I think 9-5s handle better, ride more nicely, and are super-comfortable. The 9-5 will be our highway car, the WRX the around town car.
S4 vs. Viggen? I really think the Viggen will cost less to run, and cost less to purchase. Personally, I'd shoot for a 9-5 Aero. : )
