Hi there,
I've now test driven two 2002 9-3 SE 5 door sedans. One was in VA and the otehr in NY. Both exhibited some type of subtle vibration in the steering wheel at around 60-70mph. Both dealers told me "it's the sporty ride." One suggested a flat spot on the tire from sitting too long. Another said it's how front wheel drive cars feel. Go test drive an Acura RSX and compare the road feel. Big difference. The Acura is 100% smooth and has no torque steer either. This phenomenon has me suspicious. Perhaps not a quality issue, but along the same lines.
My 1990 Integra is now 12 years old. It has been more rock solid than any other car I know of or have heard about. I've driven it accross country twice, which included some 3hr 100mph+ sprints accross the state of Montana. I continue to drive it aggressively. I see very few people on this list talking about their 198x and 199x (pre 1998) cars.
But for me, it's the vibration AND the wind noise. Those things have led me to wonder about the rest. I also don't see too many 9-3s running around. At least not as many as I do BMW 3 series (flamesuit on).
Go test drive a Mercedes C-Coupe, Subaru WRX Wagon, and Acura RSX. See, feel and hear the difference. Also let me know if you can slam on a 9-3's break pedal without hitting the stem instead of the pedal. What drunken Sweedish engineer designed those pedals?
I'm holding off my purhcase of a new car for now for the aforementioned reasons. I was psyched about getting a new 9-3, but now am too suspicios to plunk down $30k on one.
