Agreed. Occam's razor.
But recent models of BMW (3- 5-series), VW (passat), and Audi (A4, A6) all have lit steering wheel buttons. I assume they have overcome the "complexity" problem, and concluded that lighting the buttons weighs in favor of safety. IMHO, I think Saab is just cost-cutting -- complex wiring costs bucks. Nevertheless, I still enjoy driving my '01 9-5 Aero, lit buttons or not -- it's just weird to have a dark steering wheel.
