keeping the car a long time

We just replaced (warranteed) the muffler on a '99 9-3 at 70K km.
I'm convinced city driving requires more parts for the same miles driven.
Brakes, especially on automatics, go first.
Then, the muffler goes as stop 'n start driving allows condensation to build up inside the system. When your first long country drive in many months is taken after much city driving, the exhaust system will be put to the test.
I guess the economic lesson in this is that if you are nearing warranty expiry, subject the car to a longish road trip. Systems not accustomed to this form of use are more likely to show signs of wear or a requirement for adjustment on your return.
I'd be interested in hearing (again) from people who know about (or even have a sixth sense about) fuel and ignition systems. It has long been an article of faith that cars require drivers to take to the country roads to "blow out the carbon". My sense is that even with the advent of computer-adjusted fuel and ignition systems, this may be as true today as it was when my Dad was trying to teach me everything I needed to know about owning a car. Any comments?
