The owners manual for my 9-3 recommends a full synthetic oil for Saab engines. Extremely hot oil will solidify, like asphalt. This is like sandpaper in a turbo. This is called coking, which will wear down the sleeve bearing on which the turbocharger floats. My experience owning a variety of turbos over the years (I enjoy them for some reason) is that you can make a turbo last with a quality "ordinary" motor oil (I used Castrol for years)as long as you change the oil every 3,000 miles, warm the engine to normal operating temperature before pulling boost, and let it idle from 30 seconds to 2 minutes before shutting it off (depends on how much you've "pushed" the turbo). I've never had a turbo failure yet, and always sold or traded the car with its original turbo intact, pulling strong, no leaks after more than 100,000 miles. The new synthetic oils are significantly better in their ability to resist coking. This minimizes the need to change the oil as frequently and the need to idle as much. All the stuff I mentioned still helps due to the extreme temperatures turbos endure, but you can drive the car like it has a normally aspirated engine. I've run Mobil 1 synthetic since my Saab was new over 50,000 miles ago.
