Alfie,
My decision came down to the BMW or the Saab as well. I ended up buying the Saab 9-3SE convertible with automatic trans and premium package. Both of us found the ride in the BMW to be too harsh. The BMW is a six versus a turbo four. I've gotten up to 33.8 on the highway with the cruise set at 70 mph. The Saab convertible has a larger trunk with a pass-through and fold down rear seat. Ultimately, I just felt more at home in the Saab than the BMW.
The BMW dealers here in LA were very arrogant and rude, "We have the best, the ultimate driving machine". They would not negotiate on the price at all. Saab was offering five-thousand off of the price with six point nine percent financing. This made it about three thousand less than a similarly equipped beemer. My insurance company wanted about four-hundred dollars more a year to cover the beemer. I have been very pleased with my Saab. Despite what you may read on this bb, I have had no problems with the car.
Talk to folks who have BMW's. Most of the ones I have spoken with admit that it is an expensive car to maintain.
Best of Luck
