For me it have been a long journey trying to figure out what was going on with the head bolts on the 4cyl engine.
In older engines I have had very little problems with the bolts, but at one point I ordered a complete set of new headbolts for an engine job and they looked completely different in shape compared to the old ones.
I found out that the head bolts had been superseeded to the bolts installed in 97 and up engines.
When I tried to torque the new bolts they almost snapped one by one, luckily I felt that something wasn't right and pulled the bolts out before they broke. They had stretch to the point where they had a very thin waistline and were 1/2" longer than the original lenght.
I called the dealer up and asked if it was a new (lower) torque spec out for the bolt but they didn't know anything about that.
After much research I found out that yes indeed they had lowered the torque specs on the new bolts.
And now one year later I keep reading about all this headgaskets that are leaking, both on the NG900 and on 9-3 engines.
I wouldn't be surprised if everything boils down to that the new headbolts isn't up to par with what they should be.
Maybe your dealer didn't know about the new torque specs and applied the old one, breaking the bolt.
