As a general rule, with stiffer springs you will need stiffer shocks to control the ride. If the vehicle is mature, the weaker stock springs and stiffer springs can be a poor match. And with lowered suspension, the suspention travel is reduced and mismatch of dampening can lead to hitting the bump stops which is more obnoxious than it sounds. This is not always the case, but it is not a surprise when it does happen.
It seems difficult to detect that the shocks are weak through conventional indicators. But when you replace them, then you know! So the trap with the new springs can happen. You don't want to pay to have the struts removed and the springs removed to replace the shocks! Teh OEMN springs will go eventually. So replacing then with the springs reduces the eventual cost of the shocks by the labor costs to replace them later. That makes the $560'ish cost of the four shocks around $200 to $300 cheaper than doing it a year or two later. And as the koni's wear, you can simply dial in some more dampening. They are thought to have last a long time... what ever that is.

95SET, koni's, stock SE springs, new KYB upper mounts, SAS rear sway bar. I also hacked off an inch of the bump stops to provide more travel. Don't knwo if that was good or bad and will only know if I bottom out the suspension, but perhaps some of those events will not happen. But if I do bottom out the strut travel it will be rude!
The SAS rear sway bar is the best bang for the buck suspension mod that you can make an a very easy install!
