Best bet is to boost the amp turn-on signal

One of the pins on the 8-pin DIN socket on the back of the head unit is "amp turn-on" and is tied to the power switch of the head unit. The problem is that the voltage on the signal is too low to trigger the remote on connector on most amps.
Based on recommendations here, I ended up using a product called a "low voltage trigger" produced by Peripheral Products (see link below). It costs about $15 and you connect it to power, ground, and the "amp turn-on" signal from the head unit and it boosts that signal to the voltage that will turn on your amp.
Many stores that carry car stereo products carry products by Peripheral Products. While they may not carry the low voltage trigger, they can order it for you from Peripheral. Peripheral's web site also lists some vendors on the web that sell their products.
