I can compare my '98 900SE, which is basically a non-HOT 9-3SE as far as performance, to my '01 Viggen. From a flat-out acceleration stand-point, I feel like the real difference appears under hard acceleration in 3rd and 4th gear - like being shot out of a cannon.

Handling-wise the torque steer is there and can be disconcerting if you are accelerating hard and not paying attention, though after 3 months I know what the feeling is and adjust without really giving it a second thought. Cornering is a little tighter I would assume due to various suspension upgrades, lowering and larger tires - I take off-ramp loops faster and with more confidence than I could in the '98. I'll consider the Abbott rescue kit once car is paid and I have extra $$ and warrantee is gone anyway.

As far as everyday driving, when not winding it out, the 2.3L engine seems a little smoother to me than the 2.0L, and just normal, in-traffic acceleration is noticably peppier. This may be due to the fact that the throttle is electronic and when your foot requests boost, it actually provides more than you ask for, somewhat masking turbo lag. This is a totally non-technical evaluation, just a gut feeling I got when upgrading to the Viggen and breaking it in.

The seats are just amazing and the car just looks bad-ass (black on black). However, the 98 SE was no slouch either and was my first Saab and the one that really made me a turbo addict. Also the Viggen offers no advantage over the SE in winter mobility and hauling capacity, so unless performance is your top priority, the SE is a great package for the money. My advice though is to truly car because it is an awesome car that will whip most cars on the road. If in 3-4 years you are still in love with it but find yourself wanting more, then consider an upgrade to whatever Saab's offering at that time that's comparable to today's Viggens and Aeros.
