I'm in a similar situation. For me it boils down to:

9-3 or Viggen
RSX type S
Subaru WRX Wagon

They're all hatchbacks, fast, good in the snow, etc... There are other major differences between them however. I could go on for pages and pages about them ... but am not bucking for a job as an automotive journalist. Must be a fun job though. In short, here's what I found:

Saab engines rock. Reminded me a bit of my old 1970 GTO. I did have the shit scared out of me when I nailed it in 1st with only one hand on the wheel though. Body rolls somewhat, but still sticks.

RSX handling is razor sharp and quick. Honda engineering is currently state of the art technology wise. You don't feel the rush of power as much as the Saab, but get to 60 faster like magic. Smaller car ... no back seat.

The WRX AWD system buzzes a bit on the highway. Handles like a rally car (duh). Turbo lags a bit but really comes on after around 3500. No sunroof or lumbar support currently dealbreakers for me.

Once you test drive and weigh the options, you'll form your own opinions. Forget the BMWs or Audis unless your talking quattro or ix incarnation$.

Personally, I'm going to see if: a) prices come WAY down when the new 9-3 rolls out, b) Acura brings out a type R (220bhp) in '03, c) Subaru puts a sunroof and lumbar support in the WRX for '03

So unless you're in a real rush, take your own time and decide. It's fun test driving and comparing these cars. I wish they had places where you could take them all out on the track for an hour. THEN you'd get a good idea of what you prefer.
