If this is your third control knob on the heat/AC unit, you should have no problem convincing the dealer to do the real fix of replacing the whole "heater box".

I also have a 2000 base 9-3 and this is a known problem to Saab. A number of the 2000 and earlier 9-3s had heater boxes that were built with the wrong lubrication grease. It eventually breaks down over time and then the whole mechanism begins to bind, puts stress on the plastic knobs, and they eventually break...especially in cold weather.

Tell the dealer you are aware of this problem and that Saab is aware of it and you want it fixed correctly. Be firm and polite and you should have no trouble. If the dealer balks, call Saab USA customer support and explain the problem and they should be able to convince the dealer to fix it. After all, this is certainly a warranty issue.

The service department has to take apart most of the dash and center console to make this repair, so it is a full-day job. You may have to leave the car with them overnight. The repair is not complicated, just time-consuming.
