Wow PMR, I wish Miami had an open track experience like the one you had.
Anyways I took my 9-3 to the local zoo autorcross like three times in 2001. The first time was awful, but mostly my fault. I missed cones, applied the brakes was to late...a rookie experience indeed.
The next sessions went quite well. The cars in my group are a bit unfair (Honda S2000, Subaru WRX), but excluding the all wheel drive WRX and powerful (over 60mph) s2000, I did really well. I mostly placed fifth out of 12 cars in my group. The s2000 and 2 WRX machines always placed ahead of me. The S2000 will be with the Vettes group this season, where it belongs. The WRX will be with a new all wheel drive group. While I beat the S2000 to 60mph, in the straightaways there isn't much that can beat it once the car starts redlining in higher gears. The WRX, while not any faster than the Saab, handles corners like nothing else.
The other car that would always finish ahead of me was this Lexus IS300. But there were 3 others in the group that I spanked. This IS300 must have en ECU upgrade, because I spank those cars every time one challenges me. So that is how I place fifth. I should note however that a Viggen came to the very first race of the season, and it finished 1st in the group...BY FAR! The Viggen is naturally fast in 3rd and 4th because of its insane 20psi turbo and increased torque, but I think he had some work done too, because his times matched that of BoxsterS and a few M Roadsters.
I have been thinking of upgrading my ECU, but knowing that those cars that beat me last season won't be there this year, I know I can finish 1st. However if that IS300 shows up again, I'll have to do what he obviously did and spank him pimp style.
