I have a Streetpilot III and I do use an external antenna, but I keep the antenna inside the car. I placed it in the center of the dash board wedged up against the window.
From my use I have not had a problem with reception and I only use the external antenna to help increase the reception. It works with the standard antenna just fine, but it aquires the satalites quicker and more of them.
I have the GPS mounted on the Cellular phone holder I purchased on line from saab. This gave me a nice flat surface to mount the unit on. This give the unit a limited "view" of the sky, but the recetion is gained from the front and side windows.
This may be different for your car... you may want to post this on the 9-5 board. MY car is a 99 9-3 SE Convertible.
I hope this helps!
Russ
