I'm buying my 9-3 for the long haul. I don't believe in leasing cars every few years because of the money it takes to lease. I'd rather keep a car for 10 years and have 5 years w/o payments. I just leased this car because of the limited amount of up-front cash I'd need.

I haven't had anything other than minor problems, which were fixed by the dealer. The Passat is made in Germany, so it probably is better built than the Jettas. I was originally going to buy a Golf GTI, which at the time was also made in Germany. In my opinion, the Saab is much better than the Golf in terms of fun factor and quality of materials. The Passat might be a different story, although I think the fun factor is still on Saab's side.

This also depends on what you want out of a car. Personally, after living with a truck and now a hatchback, it would be hard for me to give up the room offered by a hatch. My next car with either be a Porsche 911 (if I win the lottery) or a station wagon. So, most likely it will be a station wagon simply because of the versatility. As a single guy, I never thought that I would like a station wagon, but the 9-3 has proven to me that versatility is good. If only Porsche made a station wagon...

I'm not sure that most people say that they wouldn't own a Saab outside of a lease. I've personally met several people who love their Saabs and haven't had anything wrong. I've also met others who went the Audi route (one gentleman and wife gave up their Saab convertible and another car for two Audis -- a TT convertible and an A4; when I asked why, they said that the Saab couldn't make it up their driveway during the winter; however, they bought a fwd TT, so I don't see how it's going to be any better), and have seen "I hate my Saab" postings. I've also seen "I hate my VW postings." By the way, you should hang out at http://www.vwvortex.com or http://www.audiworld.com for a while to see what potential problems with your car will be.
