I have a 1999 9-3 base model with the 5 spoke 16" wheels and 205/50R16 Michlein HX pilot tires were normally part of the SE package for 1999. The car was a special "Spring Edtion" model that was sold in Canada. I also run 195/50R15 Michlein arctic alpins in the winter on steel wheels. I have driven numerous 9-3's with the 195/60R15 summer tires on alloys as well. I find that the 205/50R16 setup provides better handling wiothout much sacrifice in ride comfort. The bump and "torque" steer is , however, much more apparent with the 16" setup.
I would prefer to have the stiffer SE suspension with the 16" wheels, the car has too much body lean, I have driven SE's with the sport suspension and I personally prefer it, although I think many others would rather have the softer, re, more comfortable , base suspension.
