9-3 brake pedal placement (5spd man) questions

Hi folks,
I had another lovely test drive yesterday, in the rain no less. The 9-3 is such a pleasant car to drive. One potential dealbreaker for me, however, is the placement of the brake pedal on the manual 5spd. I spent about 1/2 an hour adjusting the seat and steering wheel. No way I could get things positioned so that my food DIDN'T also hit the brake pedal stem every time I hit the brake.
It's a little unsettling. Kind of like riding a nice bike with pedal clips in the wrong place. Bottom line is that it hinders proper feel and feedback.
Is there a way to fix this? Are there aftermarket pedal sets wtith different stems? That would make this car perfect for me.
Or, would anyone be interested in an aftermarket part like this? I'd be happy to check it out at a local blacksmith.
The footspace also seemed a little cramped. Just move that dead pedal about 2" to the left and you've got the perfect fit. Anyone feel this way too?
Thanks,
DT
