Rear Speakers and Crappy Sound

I just upgraded my rear 6"x9" speakers in my 2001 from the stock type to a pair of Kenwood 2-ways and besides some increased high frequency sound quality, the overall effect was minimal (esp. in the low frequency audio range). I really do not want to install an amp into this vehicle if I can avoid it (it is a leased vehicle).
I looked at the audio page at http://audioguide.saabnet.com but couldn't find anything about improving the sound quality of the rear speakers. According to sources, only about 5% of the audio is delivered to the rear speakers. What a shame.
Is there anyone out there that can give me a cost-effective solution to improving the sound that comes from the rear of my car?
Thanks in advance!
