Towing eye on front?

I got stuck today. Anchorage set it's new 24 hour snow accumulation on St. Patty's day with 28.6" recorded at the airport. Most areas of town were higher. This fell on top of compressed snow that has accumulated all winter, and was pretty well glazed ice. So I high centered on my own steet and was spinning my studded Gislaveds on the glaze underneath. All my previous SAAB's had towing eyes on the front. My '99 9-3 SE doesn't seem to have one. I hooked a rope to the horizontal member under the hood attached to the top of the struts. The rope broke before I got unstuck. Any other ideas about how to tow from the front? Is attaching to this member too dangerous for a short (20 foot) tow? Maybe there was too much snow packed under the car to see the eye?
