I've been using 4-season tires (particularly less "sporty" ones) in the base-car width for winter tires. Then I can have hotter tires for 3 seasons. It's worked well for a '86 Jetta & '95 Integra. That was not sufficient for our '89 900 because the weight distribution was not so heavy in the front. Also, the sizes dictated Blizzaks for snows. They are really good in snow, but suck on dry pavement. Very squirmy like they are underinflated. I'm in NE Ohio where we get some snow, but most of the winter its just wet.
Tires make a big difference, but width is pretty important, too. Narrow is better in snow.
Our '01 9³ has more forward wt. distribution, so I'm considering that again, but haven't done it yet. The MXV4 tires (base model) are OK, but not real good in snow or dry. I gotta make up my mind before next winter.
