From the Feb? '02 Road Test Summary in R&T:
330i auto. - 0-60 6.5, 1/4 15.0@94.0 21.0 observed mpg
330Ci 0-60 6.2, 1/4 14.8@95.4 20.8 obs. mpg
9-3SE 5spd - 0-60 6.8, 1/4 15.3@93.0 21.5 obs. mpg
Viggen - 0-60 6.4, 1/4 15.0@95.3 20.8 obs. mpg
3.2CL-S auto. - 6.7, 1/4 15.0@95.2 22.7 obs. mpg
Those are gnat's eyelashes worth of differences, except perhaps for the Ci vs. SE. Perhaps part of the reason the 330i "felt" slow is that it has a relatively linear powerband, unlike the peakyness of the Saab turbos. The rush of power when boost comes on feels fast, but all the time spent waiting for it is wasted. Note that the largest engine, putting out the most hp, in close to the heaviest car, got the best observed mileage in R&T's testing. Coupled to an automatic!
Arguing the "best" car is an exercise in frustration. I'm no fan of the "everything is relative" worldview, but some things do depend on personal preference. One of the NG/9-3's strengths is coupling decent performance with surprising utility.
