I happened to have to open the Pioneer changer after a disc got stuck. I happen to be an electronic engineer by trade with job stints in repair shops. So I am familiar with the guts of quite a few CD players. Well the Pioneer unit has an extra PCB that is not in the stock Pioneer changer. I guess that this must be the infamous C-Bus that SAAB uses.
I haven't heard of a Clarion unit that has to be set up with the changer. And the clarion only works with it's own changer. So I am convinced that the Clarion changer should work with the head unit, instead of having to get the SAAB branded one. This is of course not the case with the Pioneer combination.
Where the dealer might be required however is in programming the SID to recognise the changer. Otherwise the SOURCE select button on the steering wheel may not select the changer. If you can get a friendly local SAAb owner with a NG900 to allow you to try his changer in your car, you would know for sure.
The other choice you got is to e-mail SAAB Technical. I found them to be most helpful. They tend to look up the information proper. If you phone them instead, they are sometimes wrong in their advice...
