Assuming that no major mechanical redesigns were done to the transmission between 99 and 02, it may just be a revised shift program in the powertrain controller which is now programmed for better shift quality. The revised software may even be something that could be downloaded into your car.
Shift quality and programming on automatics is where I believe nobody beats General Motors and who knows, maybe some GM knowledge has filtered its way to Saab.
