They said that you don't need to paint it. Folks with 900s and 9000s who didn't paint theirs say they have had no problems with rust.
One note is that since it makes forces on one side shared more with the other, it effectively increases the stiffness in the rear. The rear may seem "jacked up" when cornering because outside rear suspension does not compress as much. This might be why some folks mention that the steering feels funnier after.
Regardless, this and the Abbott bar really improve the handling. I've had both and liked the Abbott bar a little better because it was just a tiny bit softer and better integrated (less clunky). I'll put an Abbott bar back on in place of the SAS and report my findings.
One interesting note is that using the stiffer rear swaybar with the stock springs was pretty similar to switching from stock SE springs to the Viggen springs. With the stiffer rear swaybar the handling improved about the same as switching to the Viggen springs and it was more comfortable; especially over expansion joints.
I'm currently running with the stock SE springs and the SAS rear swaybar.
