When Saab brought out the 9-3 in 1999, they started using stereo head units and CD changers manufactured for Saab by Pioneer. This head unit must be married to the car and then the changer must be married to the head unit. Either component must be divorced before it can be used in another Saab. (A very effective theft deterrant.)
The NG-900, the predecessor to the 9-3 used a head unit and changer manufactured for Saab by Clarion. These did not need to be "married" to each other and there are aftermarket Clarion changers that will also work with the Clarion head unit.
Now, there have been a handful of cases mentioned on this board where owners of 1999 9-3 cars found they had a Clarion head unit instead of the Pioneer head unit. This seems to be a very isolated incident, but it was not clear if the Clarion head unit needed to be "married" to the 9-3 in the same way as the Pioneer head unit (i.e., is this a feature of the 9-3 security system or a feature of Clarion design vs. Pioneer design).
I have never heard of any 2000, 2001, or 2002 9-3s that did not have the Pioneer head unit, and the vast majority of 1999 9-3s also have the Pioneer head unit.
