This is my second turbo and I cool down, probably more out of a desire not to take chances and habit than a real, absolute need with the turbo Saab markets. Usually I let the car idle between 20 to 30 seconds in normal driving. I use the time to close windows, the sunroof, put away a CD, or something like that. I just developed the habit after owning a 1987 Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe for 13 years. Quality oil, regular oil changes, and warming up coupled with cooling down helped that turbo to last until I sold the car at 141,000 miles. It did have a water cooled turbo. Hopefully it's still going. With the Saab, I run a full synthetic oil and follow the manufacturers recommended interval. That coupled with the newer turbo design seems to work for routine driving. If I have been really pulling boost, like continuous high speed driving which keeps the boost gauge in the yellow near the red constantly, I let the car idle for a couple minutes. Is it really necessary? I'm not sure, but it doesn't hurt.
