I've used M1 for years. Like another post said, all oil has additives. It
is critical to achieve the viscosity ranges needed for variable climates.
It's what makes a 5W-30 perform like a 5 weight oil in cold weather & a 30
weight oil in hot. They also add many other properties to the oil & are
roughly 15% of the material.
All oils (syn & conventional) are better today. Call it the advancement in
modern chemistry. I use M1 so I don't have to change as often. People who
do the 3,000 to 4,000 mile oil changes with a quality conv. oil like Pennz
or Quaker St., make out fine with today's modern engines.
