OK Ed, NG900 it is.
I never liked the 2.3 N/A. It had so little torque below 2K rpm that pulling away from a stop sign with the manual tranny took a high level of skill, the choice seememd to be lug the engine or slip the clutch Excessively. Since the tranny was geared so high, constant rowing on the gearshift lever was the norm. This is the only car I have ever owned that when creeping along in traffic you had to slip the clutch to keep moving in 1st gear.
The engine also didn't seem nearly as smooth as the 2.0. I was plauged by a rattle between 1500 and 1800 rpm. Any chance that my balance shaft sprockets were worn away and the chain was slapping around ?
The car leaked oil.
It had excessive body roll. I bought a SAS sway bar which helped a lot. I took it off before selling the car, but I don't know if I'm going to bother putting it on the 9-3. (I'll probably try it since it's such an easy install).
On the plus side the NG900 got good gas mileage.
The 9-3 is smoother has more torque & power (to be expected), handles better, is quieter, and I'm hoping that all the traditional reliablilty problems have been addressed.
Time will tell.
