I have concerns about this smaller element.

Maybe it is not meant to just drop right in!
The air box lid needs to press on the filter surround to create a seal. The 2663 filter has been the one that has been used my most everyone. I am not compfortble that a smaller element is not going to have seal problems. Note that the filter suround will conform to the air box. So you should never switch the element end for end once it has been in use. And it compresses and its clamping load is weaker in the future, to perhaps contact with no pressure. So a smaller surround does not seem like a good idea as things settle in and age. As it is, I put a 3/8"x1/8" closed cell weatherstrip in the goove in my air box lid, and renew that every time I service the filter. So keep an eye on it and please don't recommnend this part number until you have evaluated it more carefully over a period of time.
My K&N is now 6 years old. I have my original factory filter put away. It looks like new.
