I used to use Mobil 1 10W30 and recenty switched to Mobil's Delvac 1 which is a 5W40 fully synthetic diesel engine oil. I need this for a 79 Passat TDI and decided to try it with my 95SET (147000 miles). My engine runs quieter and smoother. My mpgs are now 30 to 31 on windless days for my highway commute. This is much better than I have ever had in the past. So I am getting better mpg's with a w40 oil. So one cannot stay that thicker oils increase fuel usage.
So, by all means, try that oil and please report your findings. I encourage other to try W40 oils and report there findings. So what do you have to loose if you don't find that you see any improvements?
You don't need the 0W bit unless you need to start your engine in very extreme cold weather. The 0W or 5W will provide better oil pressures after cold starts. (This is critical for diesels as they take longer than gassers to warm up.)
There are engines where W40 makes a big difference in cam wear VS W30. Given the chain and sprocket failures with the Saab 4 bangers, especially the normally asperated engines!, I would strongly recommend true synthetic oils and W40 grades. Castrol FakeTek(tm) is not a synthetic oil, and in Europe they cannot lable as such. However, in the US market and Canada by default or ommision, they are able to lable as syntheic as they convinced a judge that it has similar properties to a true synthectic oil. The FakeTec(tm) oil is a group III dyno oil, highly hydrocracked. The true synthetic oils are blends of group IV and group V base stocks which are fully synthetic, plus a bit of dyno oil as a carrier for the additive package.
Note that synthetic oils are much different from dyno oils. They do not have heavy loads of visoscity index improvers, or may have none at all. A 5W40 dyno oil is a thin dyno base stock with lots of VI improvers added. The film stength of such oils is closer to that of the 5W base stock. Addatives are added to increase the film strength and boudary lubrication properties.
