I had a 97 900set with 225K on it with no auto tranny problems!(Well, I did have one little leaky hose at about 210k that cost $125 for parts and installation at a Saab dealer!) I drive for a living, hence the high miles, and I drive very fast. I use the auto as a "manual" when going down hills, around sharp curves, etc. and it performs very well! I use sport mode 99% of the time. I can't say that I have any complaints. If you're a true 5 speed purist, then you'll probably miss the fun of shifting and the precise control of the shift points. I think that the auto comes pretty close to getting it right, though. I've been told that you can have the shift points modified slightly, but I've never felt the need for tweaking myself. Besides, now you'll have a free right hand to wave good-bye to all the Beemers as you blow right by them!
