Getting Warranty Work Done - Brakes & Engine

I have recently purchased a 99 93 with 56,000 km. It still has one year and 24,000 km remaining under the factory warranty. On previous GM cars I have been unsuccessful in getting all warranty work done before expiry. I was hoping someone had some advice and/or experience in getting a dealer to do the necessary warranty work.
I have two problems:
1) After buying the car I discovered that it had the head gasket replaced by the previous owner (under warranty) as a result of a coolant leak. The car is now idling rough with steam coming from the tail pipe. I am concerned that the dealer will tell me that this is "normal" or within spec when it isn't.
2) The brake pads have been replaced but it looks like the rotors are gone. At 56,000 km this is very premature. I am concerned that the dealer will claim "usual wear and tear'
Any suggestions on what information / ammunition I might carry or strategy to employ to help me get these two problems solved before the warranty runs out?
Thanks
James
