The silencer is between the turbo compressor outlet and the intercooler. It is the aluminum pipe cutting across the bottom of the engine. Just remove the pipe and look in. You'll see a black plastic sleeve, this is the silencer, just pull it out with a plier. It will probably not come out in one piece, so make sure you get everything since you don't want anything clogging up the intercooler, or worse, making it all the way to the engine.
This will make a small difference but getting a open cone type filter or modding the airbox with a 3 inch inlet tube will allow you to hear the turbo much better. Just make sure that if you go the open filter route that it is a cold air type setup like the Optiflow that can be ordered from engstrom.net. Hot weather performance suffers quite bad without a cold air intake.
And yes, the turbo does work a bit harder with the A/C on since the A/C compressor makes the engine work harder.
