Spilled a big cup of java in the same manner and it obscured the bottom 1/4 corner of the SID. Removal of the SID was easy. Cleaning was not.

The glass plate in front of the display does not separate from the rest of the unit. I tried to take apart the unit, but there weren't a lot of independent parts. I used glass cleaner on the unit and got a lot of it under the glass plate of the SID. Basically it looked like a large water bubble behind the glass plate. When tilting the unit the bubble moved and I think got rid of the coffee stain. However, when I re-installed the unit the LCD was very cloudy and the display was illegible. I thought I had damaged it beyond repair, but the liquid dried overnight and the digits and letters came back.

On a side note, I think by attempting to dismantle the SID, I blew out lights behind the Night Panel and the "+" buttons. I just brought the car in for an oil change and they replaced the bulbs. So everything is fine now.

In summary, I would not recommend trying to clean it yourself, I'm not sure if there would be a charge to replace or clean the SID when you bring it in, but it might be something you can call anonymously and ask.
