I believe the rear 6x9's were 4 ohm as well, so my problem was essentially as Robin outlined: With 8ohm stock dashes replaced by 4ohm door coaxes and the rears replaced by 4 ohm three ways, the fronts sounded too loud relative to the rears; the problem is exacerbated by three way 6x9's, as the the increased sensitivity (relative to the stock dual cones) in the rear gets all the treble back there.
Net result; the stereo sounds backwards: muddy midbass from the door coaxes, tinny treble from the rear three ways.
I've now decided how to address the issue:
Trade in my all of my new speakers: (Thanks to CarToys, who have been very helpful in this process)
Put seperates up front and power them with a smallish amp (I chose an pioneer gm-5 something or another. Lacking the knowledge/time to get the 8pin DIN situation sorted out, I'm going to have to settle for high level input to the amp. Damn, being busy and ignorant at the same time really sucks.
Put the original (mediocre to poor) 6x9's back where they were.
This should give me a decent front soundstage with acceptable fill in the back of the car.
