I know a lot of people are considering installing MP3 stereos, and I'm very grateful for all of the advice I've gotten on this site, and wanted to share my MP3 experience.

I've got a '99 Saab 9-3, and the factory stereo died a few weeks ago... When I bought the car last year, I knew I wanted an MP3, so I took this as a divine sign from above that it was time (the fact that Saab wants a minimum of $100 to fix the Clarion (out of warranty) also factored in the decision.)

After extensive research, I went with the Rockford Fosgate RFX9000.

Why not the Pioneer? Everyone says when playing MP3, Pioneer has a 4-5 second gap between songs.

Why not the Alpine? Almost bought it, but right now, everyone is out of stock on the one I wanted, and driving in silence was killing me.

Why not the Kenwood? You're limited to 50 folders when burning MP3 disks, and while this is probably not a big deal to many of you, I didn't want to take much time organizing CD's.. I just wanted to dump 150 songs on a disc and go.

Like others on this site, I used a VW/Audi harness... and the dealer did require a Ford 150 antenna adapter (I found that odd, since other postings said no adaptors were needed??). Like everyone else, I lost my steering wheel controls. Like everyone else, I don't miss them at all.

What about the speakers? You guys on this site had me frothing at the mouth to upgrade the speakers, but hey, my kids have to eat, too.. so I decided to let the speakers go... and (as promised by many people) the Rockford head unit really DOES make the factory speakers sound a lot better... Not saying I won't upgrade the speakers at some point, but for now, I'm loving life.

The Rockford Unit: no skips, sounds great works great... Like many people, every CD I burned with CD Creator was a failure, so I've been using HP CD Creator, which came with my back-up burner, and that has worked flawlessly. Lots of people say Nero is the best software, and I'll probably pick that up soon. One other minor point... the Rockford has an evil Red glow, and my Saab is fire engine red, so it matches.

Cost: I paid $275 for the Rockford, $15 for the antenna adapter, $15 for the wire harness, and $60 for the installation.

Thanks to every MP3 posting here for helping me know what I was getting into.
