My Viggen quit running!

There seems to be some type of electrical problem near the top of the engine -- there was white smoke and an acrid smell from near the top of the engine. I cannot be more accurate than this, as the car died on me -- as luck would have it -- right before a very powerful thunderstorm rolled in. It rained buckets. It cleared somewhat, so I ended up walking home in the rain (with three bags of groceries and a briefcase). It took over three hours to get a tow truck.
By the way, I probably won't be using my daytime driving lights anymore. I could not get to the box to pull the fuse because I was on a very busy road during a torrential downpour. Just by calling Onstar, my battery went dead. I couldn't turn off the lights, and, for some idiotic reason, you have to turn the car to "on" to get the phone to work. That's stupid. However, the phone did continue to work when turned to "off," but I did not know it would do that.
So, what's an electrical problem near the top of the engine sound like? (Seems like it's under the black part that covers the engine.)
