Saab
Noise from wheel housing. Some owners of 9-3 models within VIN ranges Y2000577 through Y2005763 (3D/SD not Viggen) and Y7000100 through Y7000561 (3D/5DR CV and Viggen) have complained of a noise coming from the right front wheel housing. According to Saab, the seal in the housing can come loose and end up in the wrong position, causing noise from the bypass valve to be heard in the passenger compartment. You can reduce the ruckus by repositioning the wheel housing seal and adding butyl tape in an appropriate position.
First, check whether or not the housing seal is in the correct position by removing the light cluster. With a flashlight, look into the housing. If you see that the seal isn't positioned properly, remove the wheel, then the inner fender liner. Retrieve the seal and thoroughly clean its edges.
Next, place a strip of butyl tape (Part No. 92 88 127) along the edge of the seal. Position the seal on the wheel housing, then reinstall the inner fender liner, wheel and light cluster. Perform a road test to make sure the noise from the bypass valve is eliminated.
